Our Pastor

Special Note from the Pastor of St. Mark AME Church

Welcome my Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus: Thank you for sharing this glorious ministry with St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church. Your presence here today makes me HAPPY! I pray and hope everyone is walking in the light, the beautiful light of Jesus. The light that shines on the inside and is bright enough to show up on the outside. God is good and his mercy endures forever. God is good and greatly to be praised. If we continue to trust in Him, He promises never to leave us nor forsake us.

The light of God surrounds me,

The love of God enfolds me,

The power of God protects me,

The Presence of God watches over me,

Wherever I am – God is!

Reverend Jonathan “Joe” Benton, Sr.

The Benton Family - Roberta, Jonathon Jr. (Lil Joe), Bernice, Jonathon Sr.,  & Charlie

Mrs. Bernice Benton

Born to Mary Bates and the late Charlie Bates on December 30, 1969 in Hurtsboro, AL., Jonathan Benton, is one of 11 children. He confessed Christ at an early age and united with St. John A.M.E. Church, Glenville, AL. He graduated from Chavala High School in Russell County in 1988. After high school, he furthered his education at Columbus Technical College where he graduated and received a degree in Cabinets and Design.

He later married the love of his life Bernice Williams Benton on September 10, 1994. To this union came three wonderful children, Jonathan Jr., Roberta, and Charlie.

After learning, listening, and teaching, he was called into the ministry in 1999. Through much perseverance and dedication, he became an Ordained Deacon in 2003 and Ordained Itinerant Elder in 2005.

While staying focused and praying for God to show him the way, he was given his First Pastoral Charge at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, Waverly, AL in 2003. Under his leadership at Allen Chapel, the church made renovations to the inside and changed worship services from two Sundays a month to every Sunday.

Continuing to press forward, Rev. Benton was given his Second Pastoral Charge at St. Mark A.M.E. Church, Opelika, AL in 2005. Under his leadership at St. Mark A.M.E. Church, Rev. Benton established a church motto: “We Have All We Need In Each Other”. The church has grown spiritually and in membership. Also, the church has become more involved on local, district, and conference levels. Lay Organization, Love Feast, and Family Recreation Ministry were organized. Under the continuous leadership of Rev. Benton, the church underwent extensive remodeling inside and outside. Renovations expanded the church to include a larger sanctuary, new pulpit, choir loft, baptistery, pews, kitchen, classrooms, and learning center. Also, a new church sign and historical marker were purchased.
